Operations Okra and Highroad Farewell Parade (1.38 mins)
Some 420 Australian Defence Force soldiers, sailors and airmen were formally farewelled at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia, on Sunday, 8 May 2016, ahead of their upcoming departure to the Middle East Region. Around 300 personnel, predominantly drawn from the 7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (7 RAR), will shortly deploy to Iraq as part of Task Group Taji, under Operation Okra. The third rotation of the ADF's ‘Building Partner Capacity’ contingent, known as Task Group Taji 3, is a combined force of Australian and New Zealand Defence Force personnel. Another 120 soldiers from 7 RAR will also deploy to Afghanistan as part of Operation Highroad. These 7 RAR soldiers will be the sixth rotation of the Force Protection Element, which provides force protection to ADF members performing an ‘Advise and Assist’ role to the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces in Kabul. After months of training, culminating in a mission rehearsal exercise that certified the ADF personnel as ready for deployment, Commander of 1st Brigade, Brigadier Ben James, was joined by hundreds of family members, friends and local dignitaries for a farewell parade at RAAF Base Edinburgh.
