Australian Defence Force personnel from Australia's Federation Guard and Australian Army's 2nd Division are busy practising their drill and making final preparations ahead of the commemorations of the centenaries of the First World War battles of Fromelles and Pozières. Also Members of Australia’s Federation Guard took time out from their rehearsals at VC Corner on 17 July 2016 to assist with installing poppies at the Australian Memorial Park in Fromelles Department of Veterans' Affairs commemorative services will be held at Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Cemetery on 19 July and at the 1st Australian Division Memorial at Pozières on 23 July 2016. The two battles are particularly significant in Australia's military history: Fromelles (19 July 1916) was the first major offensive by the Australians in France; and Pozières (23 July to 3 September 1916) saw Australia sustain 23,000 casualties over seven weeks.
